About Counselling
What are counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy are ways to support our mental health and can also be referred to as therapy. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) describes counselling and psychotherapy as talking therapies which offer a safe and confidential space to talk to a trained professional about your issues and concerns and to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours to develop a better understanding of yourself and others. Please click here for more information from the BACP.
Why do people see a counsellor or psychotherapist?
Counselling and psychotherapy offer you a safe space to talk confidentially to someone who is professionally trained and to explore what is troubling you. Sometimes it can be difficult or impossible to talk to family or friends about what is going on for you. You may need support but feel they don't understand, they will offer unwanted advice or you may not want them to know how you are feeling.
How can counselling and psychotherapy help?
Counselling and psychotherapy can help support you in difficult times. You could be feeling troubled by anxiety, stress, self confidence, depression, relationship difficulties, bereavement, loss, life events and transitions, trauma, emotional balance, loneliness, leaving home for university or something else. You could feel you need support in balancing the ups and downs of daily life or you might be trying to make sense of how you are feeling. Whatever is troubling you, a warm, supportive and confidential space to be heard and a client led approach without judgement can help you explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences, understand the difficulties you are facing and work towards helpful change.
Counselling and psychotherapy can be offered through face to face, online or telephone sessions and can support you by:
- Offering a safe space to talk confidentially
- Accepting you for who you are without judgement
- Really listening to your problems without giving solutions
- Helping you to explore and understand the difficulties you are facing
- Supporting you in understanding and strengthening relationships
- Understanding the possible influence of the past on the present
- Bringing new awareness and considering different perspectives
- Helping you feel more able to cope with your problems and find a way forward
- Enhancing your emotional wellbeing
- Managing life transitions and change
- Helping you build resilience to handle life's challenges
- Facilitating helpful change
Whatever is troubling you, I offer you a warm, sensitive and confidential space to be heard and a client led approach without judgement to help you explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences.
